Grenada Holidays
Sleepy Grenada is a tranquil, off-the-beaten-track alternative to the region’s bigger islands.
This is an island full of flavour, character and traditional Caribbean charm. Known as the Spice Island, Grenada is cloaked with plantations, dense tropical forests and wears its past on its sleeve for all to see. And the beaches are pretty beautiful too: Grand Anse makes it on to plenty of world’s best beaches lists. A visit to the exotic and flavour-filled Grenada gives you a taste of the authentic Caribbean. It’s a wonderfully underdeveloped island dotted with chocolate factories, spice plantations and skimmed by award-winning stretches of sand.
Discover two sides to the island with a stay on the sun-kissed south coast where you’ll find hotels that are something of a Grenada institution and a visit to the wilder north coast where rustic boutique properties seem to cling to the forest-cloaked hillside and are surrounded by little more than local villages. Alternatively, you can easily add a stop in Grenada with some time in Barbados or Saint Lucia or a stop-over in New York or Miami.

Where is Grenada?
Located at most southerly end of the Windward Islands, the island of Grenada is the epitome of a paradisiacal Caribbean island. The islands of St Vincent & the Grenadines lie to the northeast and the northern reaches of South America are 94 miles away. Barbados and Saint Lucia – the islands you would most likely twin with Grenada, are under an hour away by air.
Beaches
Of Grenada’s 45 beaches, Grand Anse is the most celebrated. With a two-mile sweeping stretch of powder-soft sand that’s lapped by inviting waters, it isn’t hard to see why. Backed by informal restaurants, bars and luxuriously relaxed resorts that are built no higher than the palm trees that line the sand, Grand Anse is the perfect destination for a fabulous beach retreat. Just beyond the headland at the southern end of Grand Anse is the serene and less-frequented Morne Rouge Bay; beyond here, there's Magazine Beach and Pink Gin Beach.
St George's
In St George’s, the nation’s capital, both colonial British and colourful Caribbean buildings line narrow streets that rise up steeply from the natural horseshoe harbour to create one of the Caribbean’s most picturesque cities. Each Saturday morning St George’s vibrant market livens up the sleepy city with the bustle of local farmers selling fruit, vegetables and the island’s famous spices. Admire the beautiful city and its harbour from a different perspective while discovering a slice of the island’s history at the 18th-Century Fort George.
Grand Etang National Park
High up in the verdant mountains of the island’s interior is the Great Etang National Park which boasts landscapes that are so beautiful they are sure to tempt you away from the wonderful beaches for at least one day. Traversing the park on foot visitors will spot a wide variety of flora and possibly Mona monkeys, possums, armadillos, lizards and an array of tropical birds.
Northern Grenada
The northern reaches of the island seem like a world away from the busier south coast. This is where you'll want to head to embrace authentic Grenadian life. The accommodation is slightly more rustic up here but the views, off-the-beaten track vibe and feeling on being at one with nature are all well worth the winding journey. Just off the coast, there are a cluster of tiny uninhabited islets that you can visit, and the southern-most islands of the Grenadines, including beautiful Carriacou, can be reached in approximately an hour and a half.
Cuisine
Grenada is famous for more than just spices and you will catch a distinct scent of nutmeg and cinnamon in the air. The cuisine you will sample on the island will only further stimulate your senses. For a festival of flavours, try the national dish, oildown. This stew of meat, bread, fruit, vegetables and dumplings is steamed in coconut milk until all the liquid has been absorbed. There’s also a wealth of interesting fruits to try as you relax by the ocean, including breadfruit, callalou and plantain.
