Nha Trang Holidays
An engaging coastal resort with one of Vietnam’s best beaches, Nha Trang is made for relaxing days next to, on or even under the sea.
Rushing is not on the agenda at Nha Trang, a charming coastal town with a fabulously long crescent of pale and powdery sand at its heart. Start the day with sunrise t’ai chi on the beach and the laziest of breakfasts, pick up the pace a little with a cycle ride along the greenery-fringed promenade to your pick of seafront cafés or head out by boat to dive or snorkel off islands fringed with coral.
There are no not-to-be-missed UNESCO-listed sites it would be a crime to miss – though a cyclo ride to the wonderfully atmospheric Cham towers, created by a long-vanished Hindu empire, provides a gentle dose of culture. Instead, there are the simple pleasures of dozing in the sun and splashing in the crystal-clear sea between delicious meals of everything from super-fresh seafood to all manner of noodles. Not that Nha Trang could be accused of being sleepy. There’s a full-on entertainment complex complete with a sprawling theme park just an over-water cable-car ride from the centre, adrenaline-pumping watersports on offer all along the beach, and an array of buzzing lounges and nightclubs where you can while away the evening dancing or listening to live music.
Think that Nha Trang would be a great addition to your Vietnam adventure? Call us to talk about adding it to your itinerary.

Vietnamese Cooking Class from Nha Trang or Cam Ranh
Spend an enjoyable morning learning how to prepare some popular Vietnamese dishes from scratch with the help of the staff at one of Nha Trang’s best-loved eateries. After meeting up with the chef at Lanterns Restaurant, you’ll hop on a cyclo - a typical three-wheeled bicycle taxi - for a fascinating trip to a local produce market. Here you’ll get a colourful lesson in the ingredients that are key to the country’s culinary culture and how to choose and haggle for the best, pausing for a refreshing sugar-cane juice along the way. On returning to the restaurant, you’ll be taken through the necessary steps to create a three-course meal, starting with fresh spring rolls, perhaps, followed by lemongrass chicken or fish cooked in a clay pot depending on what’s on the menu that day. You’ll also discover the secret of cooking perfect rice and how to flambé fruit for an impressive dessert without setting anything else on fire. The well-deserved finale is, of course, sitting down to eat what you’ve made in the company of your fellow cooks.

Savour the delicious Banh Can, a hot cake that is skilfully prepared by pouring flour into moulds and baking over a warm coal brazier. Try the Bun Cha Ca, rice vermicelli with grilled fish and a broth made with boiled sailfish and mackerel bones that boasts a unique and flavourful taste. The Nem Nuong, a grilled pork roll, is a must-try dish, with its crispy meat and spicy sweet and sour blend, served with a refreshing green papaya salad. Try the shrimp dumpling, Banh Tai Vac, and end your experience on a sweet note with the Che Choui Nuong, a banana and sticky rice dessert.

Where is Nha Trang?
The coastal city of Nha Trang curves around a wide bay on the coast of South-Central Vietnam, with a backdrop of distant mountains to add to the visual appeal. It is well-connected to the country’s transport network, including the main train line. Cam Ranh International Airport is a little under 20 miles away, from where there are frequent flights to Hanoi (90 mins) and Ho Chi Minh City (35 mins), as well as some to Danang (for Hoi An). Thanks to this, it works well as a halfway break on a longer voyage that covers all the highlights of Vietnam and also as an end-of-tour extension.
Beaches
Nha Trang’s famous four-mile sweep of sand, edged with a palm-tree-shaded walkway, restaurants, shops and hotels, is one of its star attractions. Early in the morning, locals practise t’ai chi on the beach while later on it becomes a magnet for sunseekers and watersports fans. On the other side of a small headland, Hon Chong Beach is a quieter option with just a handful of cafés. There are also tucked-away coves on the group of islands just offshore, though they can get busy at times with boat tours; for a more away-from-it-all feeling, Bai Dai Beach is about 15 miles to the south, while Doc Let Beach is 28 miles in the opposite direction.
Snorkelling & diving
Nha Trang is Vietnam’s diving capital, with great marine life and coral reefs just minutes away by boat. With an abundance of dive schools to choose from, look for those with PADI Five Star accreditation; they’ll introduce you to the underwater world in safety and comfort while also being careful not to do anything to damage it. Some of the top local sites include Moray Beach, where you might spot clownfish and black frogfish, and Madonna Rock, known for its giant morays. For those who prefer to stay on the surface, the excellent visibility in the waters around Nha Trang means that snorkellers will see almost as much as divers.
Islands
Of the scattering of islands in this part of the South China Sea, the most accessible is the cluster of five at the southern end of Nha Trang Bay. The largest by far, Hon Tre is close enough to shore to have a cable car connecting it to the mainland; its claim to fame is the Vinpearl Land entertainment complex. The protected waters around Hon Mun have coral reefs and excellent snorkelling, while Hon Tam and Hon Mieu offer beaches and – on the latter – a quirky aquarium. Organised boat trips tend to focus on these in-shore islands, but if you want to escape the crowds we recommend a private charter that can take you to more far-flung options.
Food & drink
Nha Trang has a rich and varied culinary scene that caters to almost every taste and budget. Naturally, seafood of all kinds is a speciality, as seen in local dishes such as bun ca sua, a fragrant noodle soup topped with jellyfish meat. Follow your nose to inviting beach shacks dishing up Vietnamese favourites and check out the wide range of restaurants serving authentic Japanese, Indian or Mediterranean food in every setting from beachfront chic to clean-and-basic.
Getting around
Walking is one of the most enjoyable ways to navigate Nha Trang’s compact centre, especially along the beachfront promenade. An alternative for longer jaunts is to hire a bicycle; the roads are relatively quiet, so it’s a relaxing way to get around. Taxis are inexpensive, but sometimes hard to come by at peak times; for day trips out of town, it’s best to hire a private car and driver.
